The Iqama is the residence permit and ID card for foreign workers in Saudi Arabia. You need it for almost everything: a bank account, a SIM card, renting, and travelling inside the Kingdom.
How you get it
- You enter Saudi Arabia on a work visa issued for your employer (sponsor).
- You do a medical check and fingerprints in the Kingdom.
- Your employer applies for the Iqama, usually through the Muqeem/Absher business systems. Once issued, it appears as a digital Iqama in your Absher Individuals account and app.
Your employer must complete this within the time set by the authorities after your arrival, so ask HR for the status if it is taking long.
Who pays?
Under Saudi labour rules the employer bears the fees for the work permit and the Iqama and their renewal, as well as the fines for late renewal. Check your contract and never accept deductions for these fees.
Useful apps and portals
- Absher – your digital Iqama, exit/re-entry visas, and services from the passports department.
- Qiwa – your employment contract and job changes; check that your contract and salary are correct.
- Musaned – for domestic workers (housemaids, family drivers).
Renewal and travel
- The Iqama must be renewed before it expires; check the expiry date in Absher.
- To travel and come back you need an exit/re-entry visa, normally issued by your employer.
- Keep your Iqama valid – an expired Iqama can create problems with banks, SIM cards and travel.
Common mistakes
- Working for a different company without an official transfer – always use the Qiwa job-change process.
- Ignoring an expired Iqama – remind your employer early.
- Paying an agent to "fix" your status – use official channels only.
Rules can change. Always confirm on the official Absher, Qiwa and Ministry of Human Resources websites.
